The challenge

Make local air-quality readings available within the school’s existing WordPress site, with controls for the relevant sensor feed.

What shipped

Built AQInfo as a WordPress plugin that retrieves PurpleAir sensor data on a schedule, caches the response, and presents an AQI indicator in a widget or the site navigation.

  • Configurable PurpleAir sensor selection
  • Scheduled retrieval and cached readings
  • WordPress widget and navigation placement
  • Air-quality status and reading display

The Tahoe AQInfo integration brought local sensor readings into Tahoe Expedition Academy’s WordPress site. Its configurable retrieval and display workflow was used for approximately five years.

Air-quality information where the school already published

Tahoe Expedition Academy needed local air-quality readings available within its existing WordPress site. I built AQInfo to connect a configurable PurpleAir sensor feed with the school’s publishing environment.

Retrieval separate from display

The plugin retrieves sensor data on a schedule and caches the response. The widget or navigation display then uses that stored reading rather than requiring each visitor’s page request to perform a fresh external lookup.

Sensor configuration makes the integration specific to the relevant location. The display provides the AQI status and reading in a place the school can include within its own site.

Approximately five years of use

The plugin was delivered and used by Tahoe Expedition Academy for about five years. Its scope was focused: bring an external environmental data source into the website with a maintained retrieval and display path.

The school’s full website rebuild is documented separately. For another focused data bridge, see Sellers Mindset.

What this project clarifies

A cached reading and a fresh sensor request are different events. The plugin’s design separates scheduled data retrieval from the visitor’s page load. This case documents that website behavior without making claims about sensor accuracy.
