Shopify is the merchant route, you sell on a platform with a 16,000+ app ecosystem and platform-level checkout uptime, so the work is the trade routes (stores, brand, catalog, integrations), not running the ocean.
## Why Shopify for commerce
The dev platform is genuinely deep: **%2$s** run custom discount and payment logic inside Shopify's own request path (hosted, no server needed), Checkout Extensibility replaces the old theme-code hacks, and POS UI extensions make in-person staff workflows extensible without jailbreaking a tablet. The GraphQL Admin API with webhooks, not polling, is the backbone of real-time POS sync.
For one developer, Shopify is an operating model: multiple live card-and-game retail stores running with no dedicated platform SRE, because the platform carries checkout and infra.
