Nginx is the lookout, one fast, hardened door instead of a dozen unlocked windows. Clients only ever touch a single edge; everything behind it is business logic, not attack surface.
## What the edge does
In this stack Nginx is doing four distinct jobs at once: **%2$s** (one certificate, one place to rotate), **%2$s** (PHP-FPM, Node, and FastAPI behind a single door), a **%2$s** (edge caching means the PHP process is woken up far less often, this is what makes a WordPress site feel like a static site), and **%2$s** (the cheap, effective first firewall against credential stuffing).
The distinctive solo-dev fact: Nginx + Docker means the whole edge is a config file in version control, the production firewall is auditable like code, not a panel click. The write-freeze deploy gates work through proxy_cache and cache-bypass headers: freeze writes at the edge, serve from cache, upgrade PHP underneath without a visitor noticing.
